Paris, June 15, 2026 — UNESCO has issued a strong condemnation following reports of a strike that hit the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, part of the World Heritage property “Kyiv: Saint-Sophia Cathedral and Related Monastic Buildings, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.” The attack, which occurred amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, caused significant damage to the Dormition Cathedral’s exterior and interior.
Adjacent historic structures, including elements of the Lavra’s fortification complex and the Ivan Kushnik Tower, were also reportedly impacted. UNESCO emphasized that cultural property, educational institutions, students, education personnel, and media professionals are protected under international law, condemning all attacks against them.
The organization stressed that damage to cultural and educational institutions deprives communities of access to culture, education, and shared spaces essential for recovery and social cohesion. UNESCO reaffirmed its readiness to support Ukrainian authorities in assessing the damage and identifying urgent measures within its mandate.
This latest statement underscores UNESCO’s ongoing role in safeguarding cultural heritage and education in Ukraine, highlighting the broader impact of the war on communities and their resilience.
