OLPAD, SURAT: True leadership isn’t defined by the challenges one faces, but by how one uses those challenges to uplift others. In the town of Olpad, located in the Surat district of Gujarat, India, a young man named Pathan Aamirkhan Aiyubkhan is proving exactly that.
Despite living with approximately 80% visual impairment, Aamirkhan has refused to let his physical limitations restrict his vision for society. Instead, while balancing the intense demands of preparing for the competitive UPSC Civil Services Examination, he has stepped up as a community leader, writer, and social work enthusiast dedicated to driving grassroots change.
Shining a Light on Mental Health
One of Aamirkhan’s most vital initiatives was tackling a subject often met with silence: youth mental health. Leading a dedicated team, he conceptualized and launched a comprehensive Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Awareness Programme at M.A.I. High School in Olpad.

Aamirkhan didn't just coordinate the event; he personally took charge of researching the content and crafting the presentation. Stepping up as the keynote speaker, he led critical discussions on coping strategies, emotional well-being, and suicide prevention, concluding the session with an open, interactive Q&A that gave students a safe space to voice their anxieties.
"My disability has only strengthened my determination to contribute positively to society through education, awareness, and public service," Aamirkhan shared.
Mapping Paths for the Next Generation
Recognizing the confusion many rural and suburban students face when transitioning out of high school, Aamirkhan and his team turned their attention to academic mentorship. They organized a massive Career Guidance Programme tailored specifically for students in Classes 10 and 12.
To give students a well-rounded perspective, Aamirkhan delivered the primary presentation on emerging career landscapes, while simultaneously pulling in specialized guest speakers—including a medical doctor and a cybersecurity expert.
Crucially, the support didn’t end when the seminar concluded. Aamirkhan built a dedicated WhatsApp support network where students continue to receive ongoing educational resources, exam updates, and direct guidance from professionals.

A Vision for an Inclusive Tomorrow
Beyond his physical events, Aamirkhan is a keen observer of history and contemporary social issues, regularly channeling his insights into writing. Two of his analytical articles have already been featured in local newspapers, establishing him as an emerging intellectual voice in his region.
As he continues his journey toward public service through his UPSC preparation, Aamirkhan is actively looking to collaborate with national and international organizations to scale his community models. His long-term blueprint is clear: a lifetime dedicated to public policy, education, and carving out equal opportunities for marginalized groups.
Aamirkhan’s story is a powerful reminder that true vision doesn’t depend on sight—it depends on purpose.
