EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Ecuador head coach Sebastián Beccacece sprinted past his bench, hurdled the pitch-side barriers, and climbed the stadium railings to embrace his family in the stands. It was the image of a man waking up from a self-described nightmare, and the defining moment of Ecuador's historic 2026 World Cup campaign.
Just days ago, La Tri’s tournament looked dead on arrival. A brutal 1-0 opening loss to the Ivory Coast—where they hit the post three times—followed by a frustrating draw against tournament debutants Curaçao had left the South Americans facing heavy media criticism and a mountain of doubt.
On Thursday night at the New York/New Jersey Stadium, that nightmare officially ended.
Ecuador pulled off their biggest World Cup victory in history, coming from behind to shock traditional powerhouses Germany 2-1 and secure a dramatic ticket to the Round of 32 for the first time since 2006.
The match could not have started worse for Beccacece’s side. In just the second minute of play, German winger Leroy Sané sliced through the defense to put Germany ahead 1-0, threatening to blow the game open early.
But instead of collapsing under the weight of the pressure, Ecuador responded with a composure their manager had been begging for all week. Nilson Angulo leveled the score, swinging momentum back to the South Americans and setting up a tense second half.
The historic breakthrough arrived in the 77th minute. Gonzalo Plata capitalized on a brilliant attacking sequence to slide the ball past the German keeper, sending the stadium into absolute bedlam and breaking German hearts.
"We had to maintain internal emotional balance," a visibly exhausted but beaming Beccacece said in his post-match press conference. "After the first two games, the external noise was very loud. But this group believed. We went from a nightmare to a historic night."
With the win, Ecuador leapfrogs into the knockout stages, leaving a stunned German side to pick up the pieces of their own group stage disappointment. For La Tri, the real tournament begins now.
