KUALA LUMPUR / PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian climber has tragically passed away while attempting to summit Europe’s highest peak, Mount Elbrus in Russia, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Wisma Putra confirmed that the individual was part of a three-member Malaysian mountaineering team taking part in an expedition organized by a local tour operator.

Located in the Caucasus mountain range of southern Russia, Mount Elbrus stands at an impressive 5,642 meters (18,510 feet) above sea level. It is globally recognized as the highest mountain in Europe and represents one of mountaineering's coveted "Seven Summits."

The Malaysian Embassy in Moscow has been deployed to assist and is currently coordinating with Russian authorities. Officials are also in direct communication with the deceased's family, as well as the remaining two Malaysian members of the climbing expedition.

Further details regarding the identity of the climber or the exact cause of death have yet to be disclosed.
