Sintok, Malaysia – Mohamad Azri Bin Abdullah, a student of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), has transformed dreams into reality through his remarkable journey in academics and cultural exchanges. Majoring in Economic Science, Azri’s study abroad experience at the University of Tsukuba in Japan was a period of unparalleled happiness and fulfillment.
Reflecting on his journey, Azri shares, "Dream it until it’s your reality." His tenure as president of UUM's Japanese Language and Cultural Club from 2021 to 2023 and his recognition as Best Male Student at the MAKUM Arts Award 2022/2023 underscore his dedication.
A Dream Realized in Japan
Azri’s time at the University of Tsukuba in Japan was nothing short of transformative. "My study abroad experience was the period when I had everything I ever wanted in life, and I was the happiest I had ever been," Azri reminisces. He encourages young dreamers with the message: “You’re going to live and study abroad in your favorite country! Dream big, kiddo! You are not just a dreamer.”
The University of Tsukuba, known for its emphasis on Agro-Biological Resource Sciences, provided Azri with a comprehensive education that blended his love for social sciences and environmental studies. "The lessons, memories, and profound sense of gratitude that my study abroad experience bestowed upon me are irreplaceable," he says, emphasizing the importance of stepping outside comfort zones and embracing new experiences.
Studying in Japan not only broadened his academic horizons but also deepened his appreciation for Japanese culture. Immersing himself in a different cultural milieu, Azri participated actively in campus activities, further enhancing his cultural competence. His role as the president of the Japanese Language and Cultural Club at UUM for two consecutive years stands as a testament to his leadership and passion for cultural exchange.
Representing Malaysia on a Global Stage
In May 2024, Azri represented Malaysia at the Asia World Model United Nations VII in Bangkok, Thailand. Serving as a delegate at such a prestigious platform was both an honor and a learning experience. "Engaging with global issues, collaborating with diverse minds, and contributing to shaping solutions for a better world was an incredible opportunity," Azri notes.
At the conference, Azri engaged in rigorous debates, proposed resolutions, and collaborated with delegates from around the world. "Success may be the destination, but the journey is the story worth sharing," he reflects. The experience underscored the importance of collaboration and innovation in driving sustainable change.
Moreover, the conference was not just about formal sessions and discussions; it was also about building lasting international friendships. "These friendships and networks are invaluable, enriching my experience and broadening my horizons," he adds. Azri's participation at the Asia World Model United Nations VII provided him with a platform to learn about diverse cultures, perspectives, and ideas, contributing significantly to his personal and professional growth.
Television Debut: Sharing Passion and Talents
On October 23, 2022, Azri made his television debut on TV1’s "Selamat Pagi Malaysia" talk show, discussing the ability of Gen Z in cultural talent management. "Being on television is like stepping into a realm where imagination meets reality," Azri reflects. The experience allowed him to share his passion, story, and talents with a wide audience.
Azri expresses deep gratitude to Cik Asmawiza and Pusat Budaya & Seni UUM for their guidance and support. "Being on television is not just about fame or fortune—it’s about the opportunity to share a piece of oneself with the world and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others," he believes. The opportunity to connect with viewers and share his insights on cultural talent management was incredibly fulfilling for Azri.
UUM’s Triumph at MAKUM Arts Awards
Universiti Utara Malaysia recently secured three prestigious awards at the MAKUM Arts Awards for the 2022/2023 session, held at Universiti Putra Malaysia. These awards celebrated the university’s commitment to cultural excellence and the active involvement of its students and staff in promoting the arts.
Azri was recognized as one of the top male students for his active participation in MAKUM activities. "These recognitions inspire all involved to continue promoting and developing Malaysian arts and culture," says Dr. Mohd Azhar Bin Abu Bakar, Director of Pusat Budaya Dan Seni UUM.
