TAIPEI / TOKYO — Nick Kueh, a university lecturer from Taiwan, has been selected as a finalist for Mr Gay Japan 2026, becoming the first Taiwanese contestant in the history of the competition.

Nick, who specializes in Japanese language and cultural studies, views his participation as an opportunity to promote cultural understanding and strengthen connections between Taiwan, Japan, and Southeast Asia.

A graduate of Aichi University of Education in Japan, Nick has spent years working in education and cross-cultural exchange. Through his academic career, public speaking engagements, and media appearances, he has advocated for international dialogue, diversity, and mutual understanding. “Being selected as the first Taiwanese finalist in Mr Gay Japan is a great honor,” said Nick. “I hope this journey can serve as a bridge between Taiwan and Japan while also encouraging greater engagement with ASEAN countries.” Nick’s connection with Southeast Asia is especially meaningful. Having previously spent time in Thailand and developed friendships throughout the region, he believes that cultural exchange plays an important role in building stronger and more inclusive communities across Asia.

“Southeast Asia has always inspired me with its diversity, warmth, and cultural richness,” he said. “I hope to create more opportunities for collaboration and friendship between Taiwan, Japan, and ASEAN societies. Although we come from different backgrounds, we share many common values and aspirations.” Beyond the competition itself, Nick hopes his story will encourage people to pursue opportunities beyond national borders and embrace diversity in all its forms. “Asians are increasingly connected through education, travel, business, and culture. I believe platforms such as Mr Gay Japan can help create meaningful conversations about inclusion, representation, and international friendship.”

His selection as a finalist also reflects the growing visibility of LGBTQ+ communities across Asia. While progress continues at different speeds throughout the region, Nick believes that representation and dialogue remain important tools for building understanding and respect. The Mr Gay Japan 2026 competition brings together contestants who demonstrate leadership, authenticity, and commitment to positive social impact. For Nick, the experience is not only a personal milestone but also an opportunity to represent Taiwan while celebrating the diversity that connects people across Asia.
