Pangkor, Perak — A boat carrying 37 undocumented migrants from Indonesia capsized off the coast of Pangkor Island early Monday, leaving 14 people missing.

Authorities confirmed that 23 survivors — 16 men and 7 women — were rescued by local fishermen and handed over to police for further investigation.

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), marine police, navy, and local fishermen have launched a joint search-and-rescue operation to locate the missing individuals.

Preliminary investigations revealed the group had departed Kisaran, Indonesia, on May 9, intending to reach destinations including Penang, Terengganu, Selangor, and Kuala Lumpur.

Survivors were brought ashore at Kampung Acheh jetty, where they are being processed by authorities.

The incident underscores the ongoing risks faced by migrants attempting dangerous sea crossings in overcrowded boats.
