JAKARTA, Indonesia - Indonesia has officially declared Prabowo Subianto as the president-elect in a ceremony held on Wednesday, following the rejection of appeals by his rivals in the country's highest court. Subianto, the current defense minister, secured victory with 58.6% of the votes, surpassing his opponents by a significant margin. Despite allegations of electoral fraud and state interference from his rivals, Subianto's victory stands firm.
The declaration ceremony, attended by political figures including rival candidate Anies Baswedan, marked the end of a heated electoral contest. Subianto emphasized the need for collaboration among political leaders to address the welfare of the people, eradicate poverty, and combat corruption in Indonesia.
Challenges raised against Subianto's vice president-elect, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, on the grounds of age eligibility were dismissed by the Constitutional Court in a 5-to-3 decision. The losing candidates conceded and expressed commitment to upholding the peaceful transfer of power, acknowledging the finality of the court's decision.
Subianto, a former commander in Indonesia's special forces, has a complex political history, including previous presidential bids and involvement in controversies. Despite past tensions, his acceptance into the cabinet under President Widodo reflects efforts towards national unity.
