KYIV, Ukraine — Russia launched its largest and most coordinated aerial assault on the Ukrainian capital since the full-scale invasion began, killing at least 17 people and wounding over 90 others in a relentless 11-hour bombardment.

The attack, which began late Wednesday night and lasted deep into Thursday morning, saw a wave of 74 missiles and 496 drones targeting the city. While Ukrainian air defense systems successfully intercepted hundreds of incoming targets, military officials confirmed that 25 ballistic missiles and 12 drones breached defenses, striking at least 33 locations across the capital.

Widespread Urban Devastation

The assault turned civilian neighborhoods into active disaster zones. In Kyiv’s eastern Darnytskyi district, a direct hit from a ballistic missile obliterated a significant portion of a nine-story residential building, trapping families beneath the rubble.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko described the event as a "night of horror" for the capital. According to the State Emergency Service, which deployed nearly 500 first responders, rescue workers managed to pull seven survivors alive from the collapsed high-rise, though search operations remain critical as more individuals remain unaccounted for.

Beyond residential high-rises, fires broke out at a downtown hotel, a medical research institute, an ambulance substation, and multiple private commercial businesses. Thousands of residents spent the night crowded into the city's underground metro stations, which served as ad hoc bomb shelters after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued an intelligence-backed warning hours before the strikes commenced.

Kremlin Claims Retaliation

The Russian Ministry of Defense acknowledged the scale of the operation, declaring it a "massive high-precision strike" aimed at degrading Ukraine's military-industrial complex, airfields, and energy infrastructure.

However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov and military channels explicitly framed the assault as a retaliatory strike following an intense campaign of Ukrainian long-range drone strikes. In recent weeks, Ukrainian drones have successfully struck deep within Russian territory, hitting oil refineries and fuel depots—including a major facility in Kstovo—and triggering widespread gasoline shortages across Russia.

Diplomatic Fallout and Air Defenses

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha fiercely rejected Moscow's rationalization of the strikes, calling the deliberate targeting of civilian areas an "immoral war crime."

"Under Article 51 of the UN Charter, Ukraine is exercising its legal right to self-defense against an illegal aggressor," Sybiha stated on X. He used the immediate aftermath of the tragedy to pressure Western allies to accelerate the delivery of modern air defense infrastructure, adding, "Do not delay decisions on air defense for Ukraine."

The sheer volume of the Russian attack also caused ripples beyond Ukraine's borders. Neighboring Poland, a NATO member, scrambled fighter jets to protect its airspace before standing down once the threat subsided.

The escalations came on the same day the European Union finalized a transfer of €3.9 billion in financial aid to Kyiv, earmarked to stabilize the country's wartime economy and fund defense procurement.
